Bharat Ratna to Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Madan Mohan Malaviya

Recent decision of Govt of India to award Bharat Ratna to Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Madan Mohan Malaviya is great decision.

Both of them deserved the highest civilian award of India and there can be no two ways about it, but what is troublesome is the criteria used to select them.

While the choice of Atal Bihari Vajpayee can be understood, problem will raise from the selection of Madan Mohan Malaviya.

He is dead for more than 65 years now and if he can be awarded then we are very likely to see demands for Bharat Ratna to people who are long dead. May be dead for few centuries now.

I believe, it's in everyone interest to define a set of rules to award our higest civilian award. Set rules like how long we can go back in history to choose the recipients etc will help.

Otherwise tomorrow we will be flooded with demands for Bharat Ratna to everyone from Adam and Eve onwards.
